What is web hosting?
For a website to be seen on the internet, it needs a web
server to reside on. When people visit a website they
are actually accessing files on this web server. Web hosting
can be thought of as renting space on a web server.
What is shared web hosting?
Shared (or "virtual") hosting means
that your website resides on a server that is simultaneously
hosting other sites. Your site will be allocated a set
amount of disk space and data transfer and, in most
instances, you will be able to use your own domain name
(eg. www.yourname.com). Note that although the server
is being shared by other sites, your site's files are
protected and secure, unable to be accessed by the server's
other users.
What is a web host?
A web host is someone that provides hosting services
to people like you. When you register a domain (yourcompany.com),
you need a company and a server to “host”
it. We provide you with that service and more. Simply
sign up, telling us your domain name, and we are your
web host. After a few standard processes, your website
will be online for anyone to see.
What is disk space?
Disk space is how many megabytes and/or gigabytes
you are allowed to store on your server. Just like on
your Personal Computer at home, you are allowed to fill
up your hard drive with a certain amount of files. Web
hosting works the same way, in that you store the files
which your viewers will be accessing from your website
onto your server space. In many cases, clients do not
need a high amount of disk space, because running a
website and owning a PC are two different things, in
the sense that your viewers will not need to download
as many files as you contain on an average PC.
How do I know how much bandwidth I need?
The amount of bandwidth your website needs will vary
widely depending on how much disk space each web page
requires, and on which pages are viewed by visitors
most frequently. For example, assume your home page
has limited graphics but a fair amount of HTML text,
requiring about 20 KB of disk space. In that case, a
monthly traffic allowance of 1 gigabyte of bandwidth
would be enough to support 50,000 separate views of
your home page (20 KB x 50,000 = 1,000,000 KB = 1,000
MG = 1 GB). Be liberal when projecting your monthly
bandwidth usage.
What is data transfer?
Data transfer, sometimes called "bandwidth",
refers to the amount of data that is used when visitors
view your website. When visitors browse your website,
they are technically requesting and retrieving files
from the server. If you have a web page that consists
of an HTML file and an image file that are 10kb each,
then the amount of data transfer that is used when a
single visitor views that web page is 20kb.
Only very large or high volume websites will ever exceed
1 GB of data transfer in a month. An average business
website would support up to 10,000 different people
looking at their website every month and still not exceed
1GB of data transfer!
How do I upload my site?
To upload your website files to the server, you simply
download an FTP program (www.FlashFXP.com is highly recommended),
then connect to the server. In /public_html/ is where
you will upload files to be accessed in a web browser
pointed to www.yourdomain.com.au. For example, /public_html/testpage.html
is equal to www.yourdomain.com/testpage.html.
